Background

Dr. Rose Nieves holds the position of Dean of the College of Nursing for Colorado Technical University. In this role, she leverages her vast experience as a nursing leader, educator and healthcare provider to help assess, mold, develop and direct the College of Nursing.

Dr. Nieves has over 25 years of nursing experience, 20 of which she has provided primary care to an underserved population In addition she has worked in higher education for over 15 years, having previously served as an Associate Dean and Academic Program Director to a college of nursing and health studies. Dr. Nieves has developed curriculum and provided academic instruction in the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in nursing and healthcare while fostering a holistic perspective in academics. Dr. Nieves maintains a strong focus on academic instruction, quality education, health promotion, diversity in healthcare and improved outcomes. She holds national certifications as a Family Nurse Practitioner and as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE). In addition, she holds a certificate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace from the USF, MUMA College of Business.

She has received numerous accolades for her interdisciplinary approaches, including being named a star community affiliate within the local school district and receiving stellar faculty recognition by its students. She has been published in professional nursing journals and nursing textbooks. Dr. Nieves also speaks at state and local conferences.

Dr. Nieves is active in the nursing community – she serves on the National League of Nursing (NLN) Board of Commissioners as a commissioner and treasurer, she is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, National Association of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN). She is one of the founding board members of the local chapter of NAHN, where she continues to serve as treasurer and is involved in volunteer community events and mentorship with novice nurses and nursing students. She extends this mission through her local community via her local church involvement in homeless ministries and mentorship.

What are you most excited about for CTU’s nursing programs?

Learning at CTU is for the real world. We realize that our students are practicing nurses and want to learn nursing content today and apply it tomorrow. That’s why CTU nursing students start off in a nursing course. The program utilizes adaptive technology in order to allow students to focus on the area that they need to spend the most time in. In addition, CTU offers a full portfolio of programs for the licensed RN, from the RN to BSN program, MSN Nurse Educator, Nurse Administrator, Family Nurse Practitioner, Post-graduate certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner to a Doctor of Nursing Practice.

How do you see CTU meeting the needs of nurses?

The short answer is that CTU respects nurses and their time. We respect the time nurses spent on prior learning. Nurses are lifelong learners and deserve to be awarded credit for prior learning. Whether learning occurs at another university, through specialty certification, or experientially, CTU reviews all prior learning to award credit when able.
